3. Background Information(Research) It is a well known fact that automobiles cause pollution in many forms. Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxides, and Hydro Carbons are all by-products of internal combustion engines. These pollutants contribute to smog and global warming. They cause many illnesses and even death. In the late 1960's the Government and the Public began to realize that these harmful emissions needed to be controlled and reduced. This led to the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Since that time many regulations have been put in place to reduce pollutants from Autos, Factories, Waste Processing Plants, and other sources. Also, incentives were offered to the Public and Private Sectors to encourage cleaner air practices. Some of these incentives included tax credits and car pooling lanes to name a few. My hypothesis suggests further reduction of auto pollution through reduced automobile tripsis possible.
