II. Artistic Ideas Spread • The French King, Charles VIII, invading Italy caused many artists to flee thus spreading their Renaissance beliefs to their new homes in Europe
A. German Painters • Albrecht Durer-Studied in Italy, created woodcuts and engravings, and helped spread the Renaissance • Hans Hobein-He was influenced by Albrecht and his pictures were photographic in detail
B. Flemish Painters • Flanders was the artistic center in Northern Europe • Jan van Eyck introduced oil based painting • Pieter Bruegel was famous for capturing scenes of everyday people and used very vivid colors
III. Northern Writers try to Reform Society-Begin questioning the ChurchA. Christian Humanist • DesideriusErasmus-wrote The Praise of Folly; believed in Christianity of the heart and not of ceremonies or the rules • Thomas More-wrote Utopia; his book focused on weeding out greed, war, and corruption. Utopia means an ideal place
B. Women’s reforms • Christine de Pizan was the first person to actively voice her opinion of the improper treatment of girls. • Wrote The Book of the City of Ladies-Which advocated for the allowance of women to be educated

V. Printing Spreads Renaissance Ideas-This Chinese discovery was enhanced by the EuropeansA. Gutenberg Improves the Printing Process • A craftsman from Germany • Developed an efficient printing press • Now hundreds of books like the bible could be printed cheaply and quickly
VI. Legacy of the Renaissance-had lasting artistic and social changeA. Change in the Arts • Re-introduced classical Greek and Rome techniques and styles • Artists began using vernacular languages to express ideas
