Monday, August 26 • Objective: I will write an introduction for my personal narrative essay by learning how to write sensory sentences. • Standards: Reading 1.1, Writing 1.2 • Journal Question: How are you feeling about the topic you chose so far? Any regrets or are you in love with it? Explain.

  3. Vague vs. Specific • What is the difference between vague and specific? SPECIFIC VAGUE Cherry Coke Beverage Angelina Jolie Movie Star City Pomona, California School The SAE Restaurant Alberto’s Mango Fruit Why is it important to use specific details in your personal narrative?

  4. Transforming Sentences • Let’s try changing this vague sentence into one that has more specific details: • The student was running late to school and started to panic. • Work with your partner to create a sentence(s) that are much more exciting and detailed.

  5. Show Me Sentences • Rewrite each sentence into one that is more descriptive and recreates each scene more vividly.

  6. Your Introduction: Don’t begin at the beginning • “Momento Mori” Describe an unusual person, place or thing “A Son Returns to the Agony of Somolia” Creates drama “We Do Abortions Here” Telling a personal anecdote (story) “Salvation” Making an outlandish statement / Telling a personal anecdote “Shadow Over Me” Establish juxtaposition (two stories at the same time) / Telling a personal anecdote “Leaving the Ground” Create drama / Telling a seemingly unrelated, random anecdote

  7. Your Introduction: Don’t begin at the beginning • “It Beat Me Up and Ran Away” Tell a seemingly unrelated, random anecdote “Blacklisted” Tell a seemingly unrelated, random anecdote

  8. Time to Write (30 min) • Use your handouts to help you begin your introduction. • Use all your senses (sight, sound, taste, etc.) • Use this time wisely! Your introduction is due next time we meet! • Wednesday, Aug 28 (Block 5) • Thursday, Aug 29 (Block, 2, 4, 8) back to school night AND Ms. U’s birthday  • If it ISN’T turned in on this day, you will be assigned encore and/or tutoring!!

  9. Revisit objective • Today’s Objective: I will write an introduction for my personal narrative essay by learning how to use sensory details. • Rate yourself and explain why. • Return your English binder to the shelf. • **Take what you need home if you need to work on your intro!!
