Asexual and Sexual Reproduction Grade 9 Reproduction Unit
Asexual Reproduction • Asexual Reproduction is reproduction that involves only one parent. • All the offspring that result from asexual reproduction are genetically identical to that parent because the parent makes an exact copy of itself. • Offspring that are identical copies of the parent are called clones
Asexual Reproduction Example • During budding, the parent produces a small bud, or a miniaturized clone. • In organisms such as hydra or yeast, the buds eventually detach and become separate individuals.
Sexual Reproduction • Sexual reproduction in plants or animals is the union of two sex cells, also called gametes, to produce a new individual. • Sex cells from are called eggs whereas sex cells from males are called sperm. • The union of the sperm and egg cell is called fertilization.
Hermaphrodites • Most animals have distinct sexes; individuals are either male or female. • Some organisms can produce both male and females gametes and are called hermaphrodites. • Although hermaphrodites usually mate with other individuals of their species, in times of environmental stress, members of some species can fertilize themselves.
