  2. Project Overview • There are huge lists of banned book. • Your task is to find one and pick a stance. • You’ll pick a book, research it and present it • Tasks today: • Look over the lists and pick three that intrigue you • Find out more about these three and pick one • Begin research

Day 1 Tasks • Look over the lists and pick three that intrigue you • Current List (07-08) • Top 100 Banned Books • Pick three titles that interest you and find out more about these three • Use the Library’s Database • Use Shelfari (Amazon Site) • From your three, pick one! (You may work with a partner on this!) • Begin research: 3 articles (at least 1 on the topic of Censorship and at least 1 on your particular book, the third is your choice!)

Research Locations/Data Sheets • Find out more about your book • Books: Cart – mark pages for Xerox • Research Sites: GHS Library Homepage • SIRS • Opposing Viewpoints • CQ Researcher • Benefits of Research Sites • Gives Citation • Can download/print • Credible source (reliable) • Advanced Searches

Day 2 Tasks • Find 3 articles! • One about Censorship* • One about your book? • Another about Censorship or Banned Books • Print them – ONLY PRINT THE THREE! • Read them & Highlight/Underline important things that back your viewpoint! • After you have read the articles paraphrase, summarize or direct quote information onto your data sheet!

  6. Data Sheet Notes • Direct Quote: identical to the original; they must match the source document word for word • Paraphrase: involves putting a passage from source material into your own words. It is usually shorter than the original passage condensing it slightly. • Summarize: involves putting the main idea(s) into your own words, including only the main point(s).   7. Schools should be for education. At present, they are only creativly so. They have attempted to serve an all-encompassing social function, trying to be all things to all people. In the process they have failed miserably at what they were originally formed to accomplish. • Example Direct Quote: Schools have been forced into the role of serving as “an all-encompassing social function, trying to be all things to all people.” (Sipher 2) • Example Paraphrase: Roger Sipher concludes his essay by insisting that schools have failed to fulfill their primary duty of education because they try to fill multiple social functions (2). • Example Summary: Sipherbelieves schools need to refocus on just being educators.
