Teaching the Banned Book A panel discussion presented by: Dr. Susan Stansberry, Kristy Self, Beckie Rogers, and Shonda Brisco September 30, 2009
Teaching the Banned Book • Since 2001, American libraries have faced: • 3,736 challenges • 1,225 challenges due to “sexually explicit” material; • 1,008 challenges due to “offensive language”; • 720 challenges due to material deemed “unsuited to age group”; • 458 challenges due to “violence” • 269 challenges due to “homosexuality”
Even after 40 years, To Kill a Mockingbird is still considered to be controversial in many schools and libraries. Because of this status, does it really need to be taught in today's classroom?
Question: Can and should controversial books be taught in today's classroom?
Question: How can teachers and librarians best address book challenges?
Question: Who should make the decisions about if a book is considered too controversial or obscene for use with students?
Question: What rights do students have in this debate?
Question: What steps can a teacher or librarian take to prevent a book challenge?
Question: Should a challenged book be removed completely from the classroom or library shelves while the debate over the use or access to it is taking place?
Question: What steps can teachers and librarians take to make administrators and school board members aware of the procedures for handling a book challenge?
Question: What things should be taken into consideration by teachers and librarians before they select materials for use by students in the classroom or library?
Question: What alternatives are available to teachers and librarians who have materials removed from their classrooms or libraries through book challenges?
