William The Conqueror • Born in 1028, in Falaise, Normandy, France • Died on September 9th, 1087 at Saint-Gervais near Rouen France • William was buried at St. Stephen’s Abbey, Caen, Normandy • He is the illegitimate child of Robert I, Duke of Normandy • William’s mother was named Herleva • When his father died, he was crowned heir. William was crowned on Christmas Day in 1066 in Westminster Abbey. • William married Matilda and bore 10 children: six daughters and four sons. DW.

Information Learned William was honored by many of his people. Although he was crowned for a while, William only wore his crown three times out of the entire year. Those three times were Easter, Pentecost, and also Christmas. He hated the idea of a deer being shot and killed. He loved deer so much that he created a an enormous forest for them to inhabit. C.G.
The Domesday Book • Domesday book is one of the earliest historical documents known. • This book describes the public records, share holdings, land holdings of the 11th century in England. • It is a highly detailed survey held by William the Conqueror to how much land he owned, how much crops he had, and how many people owed him in taxes • This book consists of 900 pages, over 2 million words, cover 37 countries, and lists over 13,000 places. • DW.
