What is Feudalism? Center of Feudalism Based on a Norman social system; land loyalty, and religious faith. The Manor (which we will go over next class). A community (self sufficient) based on supporting the Lord/ king Was a military arrangement. Feudalism
How did William Rearrange the Anglo Saxon System? • Took away land from the defeated Anglo-Saxon Earls and gave it to the Norman knights who fought for him. • Normans = lords • Anglo-Saxons = Serfs and or Freeholders. • Any opposition was brutally suppressed!
The Feudal Contract • Land was the basis of all wealth, the oath below cemented the bond between the nobles and the King. • Commoners were tied by the oath as well. • What is the oath? • Set up based on the 3 (F’s) • Fief- Land • Fealty – Loyalty • Faith- religion
How did Feudalism Affect Society ? • All nobles kept some land for themselves– direct control. • All would live on their land called the “Manor” he would be considered the lord of the manor.
Serfs and Freeholds • Serfs- very bottom of the social pyramid- usually farmers had virtually no power were considered property. • Freeholders person who owned his or her land, they paid a yearly fee.
Was There Social Mobility? • Social Mobility: movement of individuals, people or groups from one position to another. • Example of social mobility in reference to classes would be: Is a serf able being able to acquire his/her own land and become a freeholder or noble?
Activity Our class will become a feudal state: the Manor of lady Campos and lady Cleaver.
