  3. DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION VS. INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION What the narrator reveals about the character directly What the character says & does What others say about or how others react to the character How a character responds to events in the plot

  4. Simple vs. Complex Flat characters Round characters 2-Dimentional Complex Static characters Dynamic characters Personality unchanged throughout the story Change throughout the story

  5. STATIC CHARACTERS A static character is one who does not undergo any important internal change throughout the story “internal” refers to the character’s attitude, values, or outlook on life. “internal” does not refer to physical traits such as hair color or age!

  6. STATIC CHARACTERS con… Static characters are minor characters, or supporting characters… They don’t change! They do not have much depth to them.

  9. DYNAMIC CHARACTERS DYNAMIC CHARACTERS start off believing or feeling one way … …and wind up seeing things differently by the end of the story.

  10. DYNAMIC CHARACTERS con… The protagonist, or main character, is usually a DYNAMIC CHARACTER.

  11. Katniss entered the Hunger Games to save her sister. Inside the games, however, she developed the will to rebel against the Capitol. DYNAMIC CHARACTER = internal change
