7M505 Design Project Part: Urban Design Aloys Borgers Vertigo 08+H07; tel 4625 a.w.j.borgers@bwk.tue.nl
Design project • Learning goals: • Acquiring insight in the nature of design, design problems, and design processes. • Hands-on experience with making a design. • Structural reflection on the aspects of a design process. • First overview of possibilities for Urban Planning Support (addressed later in the project).
Referred literature • Roozenburg, N.F.M. and Eekels, J. (1994). Product Design: Fundamentals and Methods. Wiley, Chichester*. • Cross, N. (2000). Engineering Design Methods: Strategies for Product Design. Wiley, Chichester*. *: key book DDSS Master programme
Referred literature • Planologische Kengetallen • Handboek Duurzame Stedebouw • Zundert,J.W. van. (2001). Het bestemmingsplan: een juridisch-bestuurlijke inleiding in de ruimtelijke ordening. Alphen aan den Rijn: Kluwer
Design project • Design a land use plan for a large urban area, e.g. • Meerhoven (Eindhoven) • Brandevoort (Helmond) • ….
Relevant aspects (1) • Residential areas: high, medium, low density • Industrial and commercial areas • Local transportation network: grid, radial, loop, tree, ring, axial, …
Relevant aspects (2) • Public transportation system • greenspaces • retail facilities • educational facilities • other facilities
Design process (1) • Determine requirements • quantities • qualities • Inventory of current situation • Order aspects in terms of importance
Design process (2) • Start with (pair of) most important aspects • determine alternative solutions • assess likely effects of each solution • choose best solution • Select next most important aspect(s) • repeat in context of previous decisions • if necessary: redo previous step(s)
Design process (3) • Select next aspect(s) and so on … • Present final design
Evaluation • Evaluation is the act of considering the state of the design with regard to the requirements (of the client, yourself, and others). • Keep track of your criteria through the design process • Keep track of your decisions
Urban Planning Support SystemDuring the design process, report all problems and questions an UPSS should be able to handle.
Results • Presentation of final plan • Report • final plan + explanation • process: steps, alternative solutions, criteria, decisions • functionalities of UPSS
