Are these Rivals…? Are Hibs and Hearts rivals? Are you and your best friend rivals? Are dogs and cats rivals? Is KFC a rival to McDonalds? • Are Romeo and Juliet rivals? • No! They love each other!!!
Defiant Someone is defiant if they challenge or disobey another person. e.g. The toddler defiantly stamped his feet when he was not allowed a sweety. The defiant teenager refused to put his phone away when asked by the teacher.
Is a well-behaved child defiant? No!!!! They are well-behaved and obedient. Are the Greasers defiant towards the Socs? Yes!! They don’t want the Socs telling them what to do!
Sophisticated Someone who is intelligent, dresses well and has good manners is said to be sophisticated. Is this man sophisticated? I don’t think so!!
Is Cherry Valance more Sophisticated than Dally? How can you tell? She is dressed neatly and is Not paying any attention to his swearing! Her arms are crossed too – she is defiant!!!
apprehensive If someone is apprehensive, they are anxious, nervous and fearful. Is Johnny feeling apprehensive?
Do you feel apprehensive waiting for exam marks? Do you feel apprehensive eating a delicious cake? When did you last feel apprehensive?
Contemptuous To be contemptuous is to show a strong hatred or lack of respect towards something or someone. e.g. The Socs were contemptous towards the Greasers.
You can show contempt by having a strong look of disapproval on your face.
