Faculty Welfare Committee Operating Procedures Preamble • The Faculty Welfare Committee (FWC) was appointed by the chair of the faculty council in February 2008. • The committee is concerned with a variety of issues that directly and indirectly affect health, welfare and the working conditions of all USIU Faculty.
Purpose FWC considers matters concerning the welfare of the Faculty; its aim is to: • Assist welfare members in areas such as; • Team Building • Entertainment eg. Happy Hour/faculty night • Get together parties eg for the new members/farewell • Bereavement • Marriage • Births • Sickness • Investment
2) To foster a spirit of unity and cooperation among all Faculty.
Membership • The membership of the USIU Faculty welfare shall be voluntary • Eligibility • The membership of the welfare shall consist of only full-time Faculty • Adjunct Faculty representatives to be considered later
Committee members • Marion Mbogo-SOB • Godwin Njeru-SOB • Dr. Josephine N. Arasa-SAS • Elsie Newa-SAS • Nakamura Katsuji-SAS • Dolly M. Gitonga-SAS (Chair) • All office bearers must be members of the welfare. • Any vacancy occurring in an office shall be filled according to the provisions in the FacultyCouncil constitution.
Operations of the welfare • The welfare will operate on the principle of insurance: Where by the premium deductible from the day of permanent confirmation, is: KSh. 500 per month. • Check off system.
Area Covered • Group party eg. luncheon, dinner • Teambuilding • Bereavement of a Member, spouse, children or biological parents • Member’s wedding • Member’s loss of work
Withdrawal from the welfare • Withdrawal of the member is voluntary • Upon withdrawal, member will get a %( to be decided) refund of his total contribution • Member ceases all the benefits from the welfare.
Benefits • In case a welfare member dies, the welfare will give Kshs. 30,000 to the stipulated beneficiary. • In case of death of a spouse, a child or any of the parents of the welfare member, the welfare member will receive Kshs. 10,000. • In case of death of a spouse, a child or any of the biological parent of a non-member, the welfare member will pay them a visit, Kshs. 5,000 will be used to shop for them. • In an event where a staff member is wedding a gift or cash not exceeding Kshs. 5,000 will be given. • In the event a member leaves employment and has been a member for over one year, he/she is entitled to Kshs. 30,000.
Activities-Jambo grill Luncheon • It was held on31st Oct. 2008 • The Luncheons’ objectives were to: • Officially launch the welfare to its members • Offer an open forum for the members to net work and share ideas; focus on investment and social activities. • Foster a spirit of unity and cooperation among faculty. • Offer an opportunity for recruitment of new members • Create awareness on the welfare policies and procedures and debate on such issues.
Suggestions by members • Members suggested that FW should remain a social forum that helps establish and nurture relationships within Faculty, emphasis should be on social roles. • If members would want investment, it would require separate contributions, the club must be legally binding. • Number of parties should be controlled. • FW organizes a a trip/ bounding session (suggested for Feb. 2009) • Members could visit each other at home; Be part of each other at the hour of need: sickness, death, celebrations etc • Increase the monthly contribution from K.Sh 500-1,000, when need be. • FWC need to have rules and regulations that govern the welfare • Campaign for more members
FWC meet on 22nd January 2009 to discuss the bereavement of Dr. Katuses’’ son, Nduatis’ father and Faith Kanjumbas’ husband. • A requisition of K.Sh. 10, 000.00 was raised and cheques prepared for each member, total amount, K.Sh. 30.000.00.
Budget -January 2009 • FW has 52 members • Total contributions K.Sh129,770.00 • Total amount of money spent • Jambo Grill Luncheon K. Sh. 16,010.00 • Bereavement fund K. Sh. 30,000.00 • Suggestions • A bounding session for members in the month of Feb. 2009, venue to be discussed.
