Essay Question Foundations Evaluate with the following in mind: • Thinking skills • World view • What is the applicant’s passion?
Essay Question 1 Today, technology is ubiquitous and always on. For example, videos from cell phones can capture intimate family moments, help bring about revolution as seen in the Arab Spring or be used by police to track down terrorists. The former CEO of Sun Microsystems is quoted as saying, "You have zero privacy anyway…get over it." If you were a policy maker, how would you balance an individual’s right to privacy and a community's need for national security?
Essay Question 2 The university is a multicultural society, where numerous ethnicities, traditions and religions coexist. Describe your current multicultural world including your cultural history and background. Then explain how you would like to expand that world to achieve a greater multicultural life. To broaden the diversity of your future self, what experiences would you like to have? What places would you like to visit? What people would you like to meet? Please be as specific as possible.
Essay Question 3 Describe an instance in which you changed your mind about a previously held belief. What led you to hold this belief in the first place and how did you come to change your view?
Reviewing Essay Questions • What to Consider • Again, focus on the why, not the what • What do I now know about this person that I did not know before I read this essay? • What insights did I gain into their character, values, leadership, etc.? • Does this essay stand out amongst the others I have read?
Letters of Recommendation • Recommendations • 2 required – HS teachers • 2 optional – additional teacher, mentor, guidance counselor • What to Consider • Focus on examples and content • Consider the author of the letter
