Introducing CPME CPME represents the National Medical Associations of 28 countries in Europe and works closely with the National Medical Associations of countries that have applied for EU membership as well as specialised European medical organisations. We are committed to contributing the medical profession’s point of view to EU institutions and European policy-making through pro-active cooperation on a wide range of health and healthcare related issues.
The main objective of WP3 • to develop concrete proposals for policy actions and collaboration at EU level on self-care, giving an added value in supporting the broader implementation of effective self-care • report proposes EU policy recommendations on self-care that are relevant for five self-limiting conditions: athlete’s foot, cough, cold, lower urinary tract infection and heartburn • main methods: review of existing self-care related EU policies, survey on the needs of people/patients, input of the PiSCE Platform of Experts
Main findings of the survey on the self-care needs of people/patients • Needs identified for persons exposed to self-management interventions: health information, access, support from healthcare professionals, patient groups and families • Barriers to self-care: low health literacy, costs of self-care, difficulty to navigate the healthcare system, lack of information • Vulnerable groups should be the main target when developing and implementing self-care policies. • 65% of respondents indicated that they are ready and willing to bear necessary costs of self-care
Themes brought up by the PiSCE Platform of Experts • empowering patients to be more ‘internet-savvy’ in terms of judging the quality of information • empowerment through knowing when to seek professional advice • good inter-professional cooperation • the need to educate doctors and patients to change their behaviours
