Preamble • Nurses and Midwives constitute a large human resource and significant health workforce that will play key roles in the achievement of SDGs • Observation related to late response and poorly articulated agenda to inform action reduced the impact that nurses and midwives could have made for the achievement of MDGs • Articulated agenda for the achievement of SDGs based on actions driven by evidence with a focus on resolving peculiar challenges in nursing and midwifery education, practice and research in Africa is most desirable • Such agenda that would evolve through consultations, consensus, collaborative interventions and partnership building across countries and the African continent needs to be coordinated and driven by commitments

Preamble-2 • The 2nd International Nursing Conference with the theme “Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals for Better Health and Improved Quality of Life – Shifting Perspectives and Transforming Care” provided the Platform to convene a pre-conference meeting of Nursing Leaders from the Regulatory Bodies and Professional Organizations from African Countries • Country representatives and one international non-governmental nursing organization, Lead Nurse Africa participated in the pre-conferenceworkshop. The countries represented includeDemocratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. • The Workshop generated adraft working document for nurses and midwives in Africa to enable us have an articulated agenda towards the Achievement of SDGs in Africa by nurses and midwives.

The Workshop • Presentations: • The need for Nursing as a profession to take Action NOW – a call to Action • Thoughts on Achieving the SDGs • The Relevance, Significance and Role of Nursing, Nurses and Midwives in the Achievement of SDGs • Key Questions as they relate to Current Actions for the Achievement of SDGs by Nurses and Midwives - Nursing Education, Practice and Research - especially as they have relevance for the Achievement of SDGs

The Workshop (2) • Working Sessions: • Current Responses to SDGs by Nursing, Nurses and Midwives by Countries in Africa; Issues, Challenges and Core Actionable Points • Articulating Action Agenda - Solutions and Recommendations to the identified issues and challenges • Draft Action Proposal for Further Discussions, and Implementation of Focused Actions at National, Regional and Continental (Africa)levels

RESOLUTIONS • Establish an African Forum for Nurses and Midwives for the development of healthcare in Africa. • Develop Operational Guidelines and Structure for (1) • Develop Dissemination andCommunication Strategy • Develop a Costed Strategic and Action Plans • Develop Monitoring and Evaluation Plan • Initiate Actions on Specific Resolutions on the Achievement of the SDGs by Nursing and Nurses in Africa

  13. 1. A Forum for Nurses and Midwives should be formed for development of healthcare in Africa. The group suggested the name: African Nurses and Midwives’ Network for Healthcare Development. • The Forum should be established in each member State in Africa • The Forum is a network of regulatory bodies, professional associations and nursing educational institutions or organizations • Development of Operational Guidelines and Structure

Operational Guidelines and Structure • There should be a Continental Coordinator and Assistant coordinator from each member country • Secretary • Representatives from all member States • There should be a Secretariat in a central location in Africa (further discussion and rationale) • There should be an articulated technology framework – to start with a robust website • The Forum to work with Regulatory Agencies and Professional Associations as core in planning and implementation of programs of the Network

Dissemination an Communication Strategy • Biannual, annual or biennial Continental Meeting/Conferences (as may be agreed) • The Resolutions of the pre-Conference should be disseminated to all member countries through the Forum’s website, Regulatory Agencies and Professional Associations • Visit of countries by a team from the Forum • There should be National Post-Conference meeting with support from the Government, Nursing and Midwifery Councils/Board, the Professional Associations and Partners to take decisions from the workshop forward within 3 months post conference and report by January 5th, 2018

Development of Strategic and Action Plans • Immediate Development of a Strategic plan and an Action Plan that would facilitate the achievement of SDGs in all countries by nurses and midwives in Africa • Networking, Collaboration and Partnership to Commence among countries to resolve identified issues and challenges • Representation of the African Nurses and Midwives Voice in International Conferences on health and healthcare related issues. • Organizing focused activities for improvement in health care delivery as part of SDG Agenda

Monitoring and Evaluation • M&E Plan - The implementation of resolutions, strategic and action plan of the Forum should be monitored, evaluated and reported with time lines • Develop a monitoring and evaluation plan • Identify and determine how to obtain resources for the implementation of the M & E plan.

Resolutions on the Current SDGs Conference • lmplementation of the SDGs Action Plan by member countries based on the identified Strategic areas… Country Committees to link up with the Interim Coordinating team… • Establishment of mechanism for coordination of SDGs focused activities and programmes in each country and the continent • Evolve mechanisms of Monitoring and Evaluation of SDGs focusedprogrammes in the member nations

Achieving Organizational Goals • QUALITY NURSING LEADERSHIP AT ALL LEVELS THROUGH SUSTAINABLE ACTIONS • Nursing as a profession has critical leadership obligations in achieving organizational goals in the context of the health care delivery systems and in engaging in actions aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). • The central idea for this conference rotates around the context of transformational leadership focusing on the nursing roles and obligations in health and nursing care coordination in the actualization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria and Africa.

Achieving Organizational Goals • QUALITY NURSING LEADERSHIP AT ALL LEVELS THROUGH SUSTAINABLE ACTIONS • Nursing as a profession has critical leadership obligations in achieving organizational goals in the context of the health care delivery systems and in engaging in actions aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). • The central idea for this conference rotates around the context of transformational leadership focusing on the nursing roles and obligations in health and nursing care coordination in the actualization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria and Africa.

Specific Objectives • To promote the discourse and review of the application of transformational leadership at all levels of nursing education, practice, administration and nursing research. • To analyse the relevance and use of nursing models in nursing leadership for quality care and achievement of organizational goals • To share experiences and recognize achievements in the use and gains of transformational leadership in the advancement of nursing education, practice and research nationally and regionally. • To review the current context of nursing practice within health policy, the health care industry, the implications for transformational leadership and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals in the African region

Expected Outcome • Many lessons for personal transformation and organizational change • Working documents to translate lessons learnt in the workshop to real life situations at the organizational level • Mapped out agenda to track actions at all levels and representations at the Workshop and Conference.
