  1. Pump Systems Matter is a non profit market transformation initiative and educational foundation created to educate the marketplace and promote energy efficient pumping systems. Its Mission is “to provide the marketplace with tools and collaborative opportunities, including energy efficiency education and training, and to integrate pump systems optimization and energy efficiency practices into normal business operations.”

  2. The Hydraulic Instituteis a non-profit industry (trade) association established in 1917. Mission: To be a value-adding resource to member companies and pump users worldwide. Vision: The vision of the Hydraulic Institute is to be a global authority on pumps and pumping systems.

  3. Why PSM was created? • Created with a shared vision of the energy efficiency community: DOE, ACEEE, ASE, NEEA, NEEP, LBL and others involved. • To educate the market on significant pump efficiency improvement opportunities that exist with pumping system optimization • Support utilities and energy efficiency NGOs with education programs, tools and services that meet their goals for energy savings or market transformation and engage pump/supplier OEM resources in their markets to support pump system assessments and improvements. • Actively participate in potential government labeling plans by providing input that is in the best interest of the industry.

  5. Why Focus on Pumping Systems? Focusing solely on individual components overlooks potential cost-savings. Component failures are often caused by system problems. • Electrical motors account for nearly 2/3rd of the US Industrial Electricity usage with pumping systems accounting for 25% • Electrical usage with motors in municipal water systems - pumping (46%) and aeration (40%) • In wastewater plants, electrical usage with pumping systems account for 20-30% of consumption. • Pumping systems efficiency is highly influenced by the system they are supplying • Improving pump efficiency will do little to reduce pump energy usage – the focus must be on the pumping system

HI Pump Application Guidelines: Water, Wastewater and HVAC • Provides pump industry input into a significant AWWA Water Research Foundation project to develop a guidance manual and software tool to assess and improve pump system efficiency for Water Station applications. • Deliverables will be of significant value to pump station designers and operators to improve pump wire-to-water efficiency, and reduce energy consumption. • Topics include periodic pump efficiency testing, understanding the appropriate application of variable speed drives, evaluating potential energy cost and carbon emission savings from pump station efficiency improvements.

  9. HI Pump Systems Section • Responsible for creation and maintenance of pumping systems standards, guidelines and re-purposing HI's standards and guidelines for pump systems education/training programs. • Focus on pump systems optimization, energy usage, energy efficiency, life cycle costs and review/approval of materials created by PSM relative to these topics is the focus of the HI Systems Section. • Current project is the creation of a pump systems standard.
