  1. Changes to SEN (Special Educational Needs) Sept 2014

  2. Early intervention • Life outcomes for children with SEN are disproportionately poor • Previously school age children • Now pre-birth to 25

  3. SEN? • Slow progress, low attainment does not necessarily mean your child has SEN • Should not automatically lead to a child being recorded as SEN • Equally attainment in line with chronological age should not be assumed as no learning difficulty or disability • EAL: not SEN but we will need to establish whether lack of progress is due to limitations in command of English or if it arises from a disability or SEN

  4. EHC plans • Statements changing to EHC (Education, Health Care) Plans

  5. School Action and School Action Plus • School Action and School Action Plus have gone to be replaced by single category SEN

  6. Teachers vs TAs • Teachers are responsible for the progress of ALL children in their class • Teaching will be of a high quality that is differentiated and personalised to meet the needs of the majority of children • Some children need educational provision that is additional to or different from this • Have high ambitions, set stretching targets • Track progress towards these goals • Keep under review the additional or different provision made for them

  7. Parents have more of a voice • Teachers to talk to parents about concerns and interventions that will take place • Parents to talk to school about concerns they have • We will seek parents advice/ opinions when needed • Parents can name an educational institution in the plan • They can ask for a personal budget

  8. Please have your say! • Please complete the questionnaire and return to me before you go • If you have any questions come and have a chat
