Tonight’s Program • Thanks to the Bethpage PTA for their assistance in getting the word out • Thanks to the Bethpage Congress of Teachers for providing refreshments • Thanks to all the Administrators here tonight to provide guidance
Tonight’s Program All of tonight’s presentations are posted to our website already.
New Common Core Standards/Curriculum New Data System (inBloom) New Common Core Assessments New Teacher & Principal Evaluation System APPR
Common Core State Standards • Grows out of an initiative of state governors • Not a national curriculum, but 45 states have voluntarily adopted • Bi-partisan support- • Begins during the Bush Administration as No Child Left Behind • Continues under the Obama Administration as Race to the Top
Common Core State Standards • New York has adopted CCS in ELA and Math • There are significant shifts in what is taught and how things are taught • You will learn a lot more specifics in the workshops to follow
Common Core State Standards • In Bethpage we believe the Common Core Standards are a positive development • Deeper thinking • Exploratory • Rigor • HOWEVER, we also believe that they take time to implement and that the assessments were rushed into place
Common Core State Assessments • NYS has had assessments in grades 3-8, but last year they were all changed to Common Core assessments • Problem is we only received the Common Core curriculum the same year • Whole purpose of Common Core is to build fluency in ELA and Math over time • State predicted a 30% drop in results and that is exactly what happened • State determines the passing rate differently on each test after the test is administered
Common Core State Assessments • Parents received assessment results a few weeks back and were probably pretty shocked • Dramatic decrease in student scores • Bethpage students fared relatively well, but we still saw a decline • State officials “promise” better results next year
ExampleGrade 7 Math Cut Scores A score of 671 last year meant the student received a Three, but this year the equivalent would be 290 and the student would receive a One
So what is the value of last year’s state assessments? Probably not much in year one.
New Teacher and Principal Evaluation System (APPR) • APPR has led to an explosion of testing • Some of it good (actually very good- e.g., NWEA) • Some of it not so good
New Teacher and Principal Evaluation System APPR • Teachers and Principals must have 40% of their evaluation based on how students perform on assessments • 20% State Assessment • 20% Local Assessment • Rest of evaluation based on observations, portfolio, professionalism, communication
New Data System (inBloom) • State is aggregating all student data • Bethpage is NOT an active participant • Bethpage Board of Education rejected Race to the Top and we do not have to participate • We are submitting the minimal amount of data permitted by law • No Social Security numbers, no IEP’s, no disciplinary records, no medical information
The Big Picture All five Bethpage schools were categorized as “In Good Standing” by SED Bethpage High School was recognized by the State Education Department as a High Performing School Bethpage High School was recognized by Newsweek as the 353rd Best High School in America! Kramer Lane just named a federal Blue Ribbon School of Excellence!
The Big Picture • Bethpage continues to work on ways to cultivate creativity, community spirit, problem solving • 21st Century Program • The Fine and Performing Arts • Rich extracurricular offerings
