Welcome to Parent Night 2013 Mrs. Rokos Fifth Grade
All about Mrs. Rokos • ~20th year of teaching • ~19 years teaching at South • ~18 years teaching 5th grade • ~Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education • ~Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction • ~50+ hours beyond my Master’s Degree • ~Took reading, technology, and special education courses over the summer
New at South... • ~Character Counts: A district initiative approved by our D47 school board last year. It is a philosophy that reflects what we are already doing in our buildings and community. It is a mindset of how we treat each other and centers around the pillars of : • Responsibility • Trustworthiness • Citizenship • Caring • Fairness • Respect • District 47 is hosting district-wide assemblies this fall for students. South’s assembly will be on September 16. • ~Synergy Parent VUE portal. Parents can view their child’s demographics, attendance, current schedule, and health immunizations. Letter coming home with you tonight. • ~South Elementary will host its first Dental Clinic on Monday, Sept. 23.
Important information • ~The District 47 folder that came home with your child on the first day of school included a lot of important and helpful information including the 2013-2014 Parent/Student Handbook on Rights, Responsibilities, & Discipline, the South Elementary Handbook, volunteer guidelines, and an updated copy of the District 47 Student Incident Report. • ~Progress Reports have been updated to align more with our writing and math curriculum. • ~ISAT results will come home in the Beginning of the Year Report in October. • ~Please return the Student Profile sheets as soon as possible. • ~Please make sure you sign up for October conferences in the cafeteria.
Reading in our Classroom • We will create a reading community • We will respond to our reading with writing • I will encourage a love for reading • I will read aloud to the students daily • I will share many texts with them • I will help them select “just right” books • The students will read independently daily • The students will participate in guided reading groups • The students will participate in stations that provide interesting, engaging, and worthwhile literacy activities • The students will talk about books daily • The students will reflect on how they have become better readers
Writing in Our classroom • Students will participate in differentiated writing groups • Students will listen to authentic published text • Students will write daily • Students will watch video clips of authors speaking about his/her writing process • Students will evaluate benchmark papers • Students will discuss the writing traits used by authors in the shared texts we explore • Students will conference with the teacher • Students will reflect on how they have become better writers
Scholastic Traits Writing • In our second year with this program • Built upon best practice cornerstones: • ~writing workshop • ~writing process • ~writing traits • Aspiraled sequence of instruction • Traits of good writing are covered systematically and intermittently throughout the school year • Contains carefully planned writing lessons, assessments, and a comprehensive teacher’s guide • Focuses on three modes of writing: narrative, expository, and persuasive • Is aligned to the new Common Core State Standards
Map TestingMeasure of Academic Progress • Determines student’s instructional level • Measures growth throughout the year • Adapts to each child's level of learning • Taken as a class in the school's computer lab • 1 hour testing sessions • Grades 1-8 • Tests given in reading and math • Two times per year (September and April) • Teacher report will help to analyze areas of academic strength and challenge of each student • Parent reports sent home 4 to 6 weeks following the testing period
Homework • 50 minutes of homework nightly for fifth graders • Students may have the following homework daily: • Independent reading (100 minutes of reading each week) • Study Link • Study time for tests • Unfinished class work • H.O.T. “Homework on Time” passes • Homework will be posted daily on my classroom website
