A little bit about me… • 7th year teaching Gr. 2 at Wheelock • M.Ed. Literacy and Language • Licensed Reading Specialist K-12 • Moving to Norfolk (my hometown) this weekend!
My Expectations For your child: For you: Read newsletters/handouts Utilize the classroom website Review work daily Assist with homework and studying Help your child be prepared for the day Snack Home/School folder Homework • Try his/her best • Follow classroom and school rules • Complete homework • Take responsibility for his/her own actions and belongings
A Typical Week in Room 108 Every day: • Reader’s Workshop • Mini lesson based on a specific comprehension strategy • Independent, “just right” reading time • Word Study/ Centers • Small guided reading groups with me • Independent and/or group based centers • Math • whole group, small group, partner and independent work • A Special • A Snack (afternoon)
A Week in Room 108 Continued… 4 times/week: • Writer’s Workshop • Mini lesson on a specific skill/strategy • Independent writing time • Genres: Narrative, Lab Reports and Science Books, Persuasive/Opinion, and Poetry 2-3 times/week • Science: Balancing & Weighing, Weather, Animal Life Cycles • Social Studies: Maps & Globes, Famous Americans, American Family • Spanish (Mondays and Tuesdays) • Mandarin (Mondays and Thursdays) Once a week: • Spelling test (Fridays) • Open Circle
Homework • Nightly, students are encouraged to: • Study spelling words • Weekly tests will be on Fridays. • Practice math facts • “Math Wizard” challenges will be given on a • regular basis to encourage and ensure the • mastery of facts. • Timed but “untimed” • Read • At least 15 minutes/night • Starting in October a reading calendar and • monthly reading project will be sent home.
Homework Continued • In addition, your child will receive an additional homework assignmentMonday-Thursday nights. • Starting next week you will find a H.U.G. (Homework User Guide) sheet in the back pocket of the home/school folder. • The weekly assignments will be detailed on that sheet. You are expected to assist your child and sign and return that form daily. Mondays – Handwriting/writing Tuesdays – Spelling Practice Wednesdays – Math Thursdays – Study Spelling Words • Weekly bonus challenges will be provided for enrichment
