Gluttony It is the uncontrolled desire for and indulgence in food and drink. • Overeating at Thanksgiving/Christmas/Easter • Getting drunk • Consuming things that are harmful to the body; cigarettes, drugs, too much candy, etc. • It includes not wanting others to have food/drink because you want it. • It includes any over indulgence in luxury • It refers to any uncontrolled appetite; shopping, chocolate, gambling etc.
Envy It is discontent over the good fortune or success of others. • It is not just jealousy. • It is not wanting others to have something good – it is sometimes vengeful. • It includes breaking someone’s video game because you don’t want him to have it. • It includes being angry that another student was made class president. • It includes being angry that another student received an expensive birthday gift.
Sloth It is laziness or carelessness. • It includes the lack of desire to do one’s duties, especially spiritual ones; such as prayer, going to Mass, doing works of charity, etc. • It is not the same as desire for rest or leisure. • It is negligence.
We all have different dispositions to sin. • We each must examine our own conscience and know our own weakness in order to overcome them with God’s help. • We should ask God to help us overcome our sinfulness.
