E906 Japanese Collaboration

This project involves a collaboration between KEK, RIKEN, Kyoto University, and Tokyo Tech for the design, funding, and construction of the Station3 experiment. Funding and support from various sources are being sought, and the project will involve multiple tasks including frame construction and wire winding. The collaboration aims to finalize the design and schedule, as well as address the readout electronics and gas system requirements.

  1. E906 Japanese Collaboration • Current members • KEK • Shinya Sawada • RIKEN / RIKEN BNL Research Center • Yuji Goto, Atsushi Taketani, Yoshi Fukao, Manabu Togawa • Kyoto University • Kenichi Imai, Tomofumi Nagae • Tokyo Tech • Toshi-Aki Shibata, Yoshiyuki Miyachi • Students from Kyoto and Tokyo Tech • local supervision by Japanese postdoc is required

  2. Participation • Station3 construction • design assumption • size 2m x 2m • hexagonal structure • 1 anode wire : 3 field wire • cost • rough estimation by Japanese company (RINEI/REPIC) • XX $120K, UU $150K-$250K, VV $150K-$250K • depending on stereo-wire angle • frame only $160K-$200K • FNAL winding machine available? • final design to be fixed • size 2.28m x 2.67m (opposite magnet polarity) • stereo wire-angle 14 degree? • 400m resolution required • hexagonal or box structure? • readout electronics? • preamp from old Station1/2/3 available? • old FERA/CAMAC TDC available? • gas system? 1.5cm X X

  3. Funding/support • RIKEN support • $300K x 2 years possible (to be negotiated again) • $300K for physics-related hardware task (Station3) + $300K for common task (magnet, Fermilab-related task) • 2009 – 2010? • JFY2008 already started in April 2008 • accelerated schedule necessary… • postdoc support • 1 postdoc / year as contract researcher • he/she can apply RIKEN special postdoc • good candidate? • Station3 • frame by RINEI ($200K) + wire winding at FNAL (cost?) • Fermilab infrastructure • RIKEN $300K + outside fund • JFY2008 availability unknown yet

  4. Funding/support • Outside fund • US-Japan • operated by KEK • ~$4M in total, but decreasing • FNAL/SLAC/BNL projects and R&D’s supported • applied in 2008, but rejected • E906 US-Japan collaboration should be ideal for US-Japan fund • necessary as a basis of the E906 US-Japan collaboration • travel support, etc. • push from US-side very important • to be applied in 2009, again • no large amount expected, $100K maximum? • JSPS grant • application in October, 2008 • decision in April, 2009 • RIKEN fund other than radiation lab • other funds/grants?

  5. To do • Many things • before MoU… • participation of postdocs and students • other institutions may be possible • funding/schedule • station3 design fix and construction schedule • readout electronics/gas system
