Triple-beam balance • Used to measure mass (in grams) • Make sure all balances are at 0 and the scale is pointing to 0 prior to using • Place object on pan • Move the riders over until they hit 0. Then, add the mass of each rider up to get overall mass of object.
Spring Scale • Used to measure a force pulling on the scale (often in Newtons or grams) • Can use to measure friction or the force of gravity exerted on an object on Earth (weight) • Make sure that these are zeroed out prior to hanging something from them
Graduated Cylinder • Used to measure the volume of a liquid (usually in mL) • Make sure that it’s sitting on a flat surface and have eyes level with the liquid
Graduated Cylinder The surface of the liquid will be curved in the graduated cylinder. Read the volume at the bottom of the curve, which is called the meniscus.
Erlenmeyer Flask Used to store and mix chemicals
Beaker • Used for holding and pouring liquids • Measure first in a graduated cylinder since those give more accurate measurements
Pipettes • Used for transferring very small amounts of liquid • Make sure to be to avoid cross contamination of these
