  2. IMPROVEDACCESS TO SCREENING: Delayed identification of children from less privileged backgrounds? TO DIAGNOSIS: Shortage of qualified diagnosticians –leads to delayed intervention TO THERAPEUTIC AND REHABILITATIVE SERVICES: Often too expensive; spotty insurance coverage; too few qualified personnel to meet demand. • STEPS TO DEVELOP RECOMMENDATIONS • Research the following topics: • Statistics on screening rate/ ages by region and race/ethnicity • How is EOHHS advising DOI on the interpretation of the ARICA law? • What autism specialty programs exist in the state currently to prepare professionals.

  3. ENHANCED COORDINATION INFORMATION AND REFERRAL • Single point of entry needed for information, referral and case management. TRANSITION Needs to be smoother for: • Family-based to school-based services • From Preschool to Kindergarten • STEPS TO DEVELOP RECOMMENDATIONS • Examine mission of Regional Autism Centers (DDS) and Autism Consortium (teaching hospitals) • Funding? Areas of overlap? Areas of specialization? Potential for collaboration? • MOU between DPH and DESE for appropriate transition services drafted but never signed or implemented. • What would it take to make this happen? • Should this be a model for other agencies?
