  2. THE CIRCLE OF COURAGE

Belonging: Children must attach to caring adults to begin the process of learning and incorporate basic social values. • “I belong here – I am important to someone.” • Mastery: Children must develop social, intellectual and academic competence to become capable and responsible citizens. • “I am good at something – I can succeed.”

  4. Generosity: A positive learning environment is characterized by a supportive, caring climate. • “I am considerate towards others.” • Independence: Children must feel secure and be guided by caring adults to develop positive independence. • “I have the power to make good decisions.”

  5. MOVING TOWARDS A SCHOOL OF COURAGE CHANGES IMPLEMENTED SO FAR • Guardian educators per grade • Anti-Bully policy • Moral value lesson every morning • Intercom rules which focus on social skills, school rules and acceptable behaviour • Grade 7 demerit system • Hall detention • The Circle of Courage in the classroom • Parent information evening

WHAT IS P0SITIVE DISCIPLINE ? • It focuses on solutions more than on problems. • It aims to develop a child’s own self-discipline. • It does not mean letting children do what they want. • It encourages children to solve their own problems. • It is about teaching life-long skills. • It means praising children when they do well. • It calls on adults to practice what they preach. • It teaches non-violence, empathy, self respect and respect for the rights of others.

IMPLEMENTING THE SCHOOL OF COURAGE PROGRAMME • Get everyone on board. • Assess the current situation. • Create a plan for positive discipline. • Decide on the approach - test strategies. • Monitor the situation – keep everyone informed. • Evaluate the programme. • Revise the plan to improve discipline.

COMPLETING THE CIRCLE • A child who has a sense of belonging can say: I am loved. • A child who has internalised generosity can say: I have a purpose for my life. • A child who has achieved independence can say: I have the power to make decisions. • A child who has experienced mastery can say: I can succeed.

  13. What more could we wish for our children than to complete their own circles?
