  1. America Grows Up d. Describe the construction of the Erie Canal, the rise of New York City, and the development of the nation’s infrastructure. e. Describe the reasons for and importance of the Monroe Doctrine. SSUSH7 Students will explain the process of economic growth, its regional and national impact in the first half of the 19th century, and the different responses to it. a. Explain the impact of the Industrial Revolution as seen in Eli Whitney’s invention of the cotton gin and his development of interchangeable parts for muskets.

America Industrializes • Industrialization in the Northeast • Manufacturing shifts from hand tools to Machines (powered by water) • Factories replace home labor, and Unskilled labor replaces Artisans. • Cities Boom • Cities along the east coast grow rapidly. • People leave towns and migrate to the city.

Eli Whitney Makes His Mark… • Interchangeable Parts • Created by Eli Whitney as a way to improve gun production. • Created identical gun parts for fast assembly and repair. • Cotton Gin • Invented by Eli Whitney. • Made processing cotton fast and cheap, cotton will now become the key cash crop of the South. • Slavery will be expanded, previously was diminishing due to falling tobacco prices.

American Nationalism and it’s Foreign Policy • U.S. Takes Florida • Andrew Jackson sent by President Monroe to punish Seminole Indians. • Jackson captures Spanish towns/Governor. • Florida signs Adams-Onis Treaty • Monroe Doctrine • U.S. foreign policy under President Monroe. • Stated that America’s were no longer an area for European colonization • U.S. could not enforce it.

Transportation Improves • Eire Canal • Man made waterway connecting the Lake Eire, Hudson River, and Atlantic Ocean. • Made transport by water cheaper and quicker. • National Road • East/West highway that was designed to improve travel by land. • Steamboats • Travel upstream became faster and cheaper. "Clinton's Big Ditch"
