CC sub-IPT Meeting CC PA 1.1.P3C.CN.01 Cadarache, 14-16 January 2014 Summary of observations and recommendations concerning 316LN CC case parent material S. Sgobba EN-MME-MM CERN
Selectedresults on CC parent metalassessed by CERN (I) Results of NDE - on 316LN plates produced by TISCO - on 316LN extruded products provided by TISCO • Examinations on parent metal deliveries of Nov. 2011 issued from hot rolled plates and from extrusions • First results on L and square shape extrusion samples of the most recent (fine grained) production, delivered at CERN Jan. 2014 (IV) Conclusions 2
Method proposed by CERN and agreed : Combination of EN 10307 with the condition of a full examination of the whole products, i.e. inspecting 100 % of the volume and not according to a grid. and EN 4050-4 for the acceptance criteria, class 4 with a restriction on the max. length of the accceptable single discontinuity linear to fulfill original PA requirements concerning discontinuity area EN 4050-4 (I) Results of NDE on 316LN plates produced by TISCO
EDMS 1274542, 2013-03-08 5 (I) Results of NDE on 316LN plates produced by TISCO
6 (I) Results of NDE on 316LN plates produced by TISCO
7 (I) Results of NDE on 316LN plates produced by TISCO
Discussion, plates • A combination of the testing method of EN 10307 (100 %) and acceptance criteria based on prEN 4050-4 compliant with PA requirements perfectly adapted • 3 plates acceptable, 2 showing several indications • An investigation of the origin of the indications is suggested • This method was applied with success also to the sample delivered to CERN in the frame of the gravity supports • Unfortunately the two plates with indications were no longer available for further destructive inspections 8 (I) Results of NDE on 316LN plates produced by TISCO
EDMS 1275048, 2013-03-12 9 (I) Results of NDE on 316LN extrusions produced by TISCO
10 (I) Results of NDE on 316LN extrusions produced by TISCO
(I) Results of NDE on 316LN extruded products provided by TISCO 12
Discussion, extrusions • A combination of the testing method of EN 10307 (100 %) and acceptance criteria based on prEN 4050-4 compliant with PA requirements perfectly adapted • All shapes conform to prEN 4050-4 class 4 (with single linear discontinuity of 6 mm maximum allowed length), no indications have been found • It is strongly suggested that the shapes are premachined before the control, including the internal surface for square hollow shapes (I) Results of NDE on 316LN extruded products provided by TISCO

Received at CERN, 08 Jan. 2014 (III) First results on L and square shape extrusion samples of the most recent (fine grained) production, delivered at CERN Jan. 2014 29
Results of UT inspection from J.M. Dalin (Cofrend level 3): "I made the UT on L shape and square shape for ITER yesterday (09/10/2014). I did not find discontinuity inside the volume of the material (resolution: FBH 1.2 mm on 35 mm thickness), the sound goes easily across the material and the background noise is very low, the back wall echo is very clean." Acceptable to EN 4050-4 class 4 including the restriction on the max. length of the accceptable single discontinuity linear • Following inspections willinclude as per previous extrusions: • VT, PT • Metallography (macro/micro), grain size, delta ferrite, inclusion content ASTM E45 method D... 2 times: in the corner regions and in a standard position in the rest of the shapes. • For all except inclusion and ferrite longitudinal (extrusion direction) and transverse viewswillbeobtained • Hardness (HB) in two positions as above • Tensile tests at RT, 4.2 K and fracture mechanics test at 7 K (III) First results on L and square shape extrusion samples of the most recent (fine grained) production, delivered at CERN Jan. 2014 30
Discussion and conclusions • To the extent of the provided and controlledmaterial: • - method for UT assessed and agreed • - someproducts (plates) showed indications as a result of CERN UT examinations • - hardness as expected • grain size finer for plates • fracture mechanicspropertiesfavourable • relation of JIC to yieldstrength at cryogenic T as expected • fracture toughnessvery high • inhomogeneities in the parent metal of HR plates resulted in issues withbeamwelding discussed in the nextpresentationconcerningweldtesting • inhomogeneitiesobserved as well in the 90 mm 316L plate used in the explosion cladbimetal for the feeders (inspection on a dedicatedsample of parent metalthat CERN added to the proposed check of the homogeneity of composition decided on 31/10/2013) • itissuggested to investigate on a dedicated parent metalsample possible segregations in the SS parent metal of the CC clad plate 31
