  3. Check-in: Homework & Exams Homework review: • How was the homework? Exams: • Ready? • Any questions or concerns • Breakout in groups of 2 for 5 minutes to share your readiness for the exams. Take turns.

  4. Organization Online versus Brick & Mortar How do you stay organized in a brick & mortar class? What unique challenges are there in an online environment? Today we’ll talk about organization in school and look at unique some considerations of being online.

Wake Up and Get Organized Get Ready: Organized students manage their schedule daily and know what’s in store Get Set: Each morning check the to-do list from yesterday, and move any unfinished items to your list for today or to a realistic day on your calendar. Go: You don’t leave the house without your keys. Don’t start your day without making sure your supplies are ready. For online school, your supplies might be a bit different!

  6. Organized Students Use Tools Get your supplies ready. Being online means more tools at our disposal!

  7. Discussion: Where Do You Keep Things? • Do you ever lose your homework? Is it under the bed, did the file get deleted, did the dog eat it again, where is it? • How do you do to keep track of all of your paperwork? Essays, homework, quizzes, study guides? • How long do you keep old papers?

What to Keep What to keep: Save everything (almost) When it comes to your school work, save everything – You never know when you might need it. • Homework and Essays • Study Guides • Reading Materials • Course syllabi • Emails from Instructors • Responses to homework • Projects that you may want later for a portfolio What to delete: Almost nothing. Optional Discussion.

  9. Where To Keep It Just because our classes are online doesn’t mean that we don’t need notebooks or binders. You might use a combination of: • Notebooks & Folders • Binders • Computers

  10. Get Organized with Notebooks & Folders If you use notebooks: • Have at least one multi-tabbed notebook per class • Assign one tab each for • Homework / writing assignments, • Class & reading notes (could use one for each) • Resources: Formula sheets, verb charts, etc. • Supplement with folders to tuck away loose handouts and related materials. • Consider dating each loose end and keeping in order • Consider using a binder instead. Then you have less loose ends to keep track of.

  11. Get Organized With a Binder To do so you need the right supplies If you use one ore more binders: • Get a D Ring binder. Too big is better than too small. • Binder supplies should include: • One subject divider for each class • More colored tabs for sub-sections (ideally 6 tabs per class) • College ruled notebook paper • Zipper pouch to store supplies including • pens, pencils, highlighters, calculator, flash drive.

A Well Equipped Binder Makes Work Easy To Find Your binder might include: • Binder cover: 1 binder per school year. • Optional Zipper pouch for supplies. • Front page should have your class schedule • Subject/class period dividers for each class. • Within each put the syllabus on top and then a tab for: • Notes (keep your class and reading notes in here) • Handouts (keep new ones on top) • Assignments • Exams and Study Guides • Blank Paper • One pocket folder per class. Subject/class period pocket organization: • Left side pouch = assignments to be turned in • Right side pouch – homework to be completed • OR USE A FOLDER – 1 per class

  13. Discussion: Binder & Notebook Organization • How many of you use binders or notebooks? What is your system? • Notebooks or Binder systems are standard in brick & mortars. • What might be different online?

  14. Computer Organization One might say, “The more organized the computer, the more organized the student.” Or the other way around. When organizing your computer, do consider • File structure • Naming conventions • Back up your work • Email • Other?

  15. Computer Organization – File Structure File Structure: Create folders on your computer. A. In the Documents folder create a folder called “OHS” B. In OHS > Create a folder for each club C. In OHS . Create a folder for each class • In each class have subfolders that include: • Syllabus and Course Info • Notes (keep your class and reading notes in here) • Handouts & Resources • Homework – In Progress • Homework – Complete (optional – you could have one homework folder) • Study Guides (if you create study guides for exams you can save them here)

Computer OrganizationDo’s & Don’t of File Naming Don’t Do Keep your file names short (under 25 characters is good), descriptive, easy to read, and avoid special characters Use a naming convention that is consistent and makes it easy for you to find your work later Save your homework in formats you know your teachers use like .rtf, .doc, xls, etc. Name your essay “week # 5 paper 2 dfrl democracy dec 8 2011” Then name the next draft “paper revision for dfrldmcrcy version2” Save your file in an unusual format that only you can read

  18. Computer OrganizationMore Do’s & Don’t of File Naming Don’t Do Use underscores. Instead of labeling the file “naming tutorial” call it “naming_tutorial” Use the international standard for date notation. It is YYYYMMDD so 2011_12_09 . Use letter “v” for “version number” and then v01, v02, and when complete, name it _FINAL. Use spaces and periods in the name because it can result in lost files and errors. If date stamping in the file name, don’t use Dec 9 2011. If your file will have multiple versions don’t assign random names to versions.

  20. Odds and Ends Don’t forget to save backup copies of your work! Save important emails and responses to your homework. Consider creating a folder called “Portfolio” to start saving assignments that may be good to present later. Also save positive feedback from instructors here. Before bed, consider coming up with 1-3 questions you might ask in your next class. Put the questions in a place that you’ll remember.

  23. Homework – Due Date TBC • Make a list of all of the supplies you have for next semester. • Make a list of missing supplies you need. Share it with your parents. • Set up files on your computer so that you are ready for next semester. One folder for each class. Then make subfolders that make sense. Explain what folders and subfolders you used. • Make a cheat sheet with naming conventions for each of the following, and share it with us. • Syllabus • In progress draft of a class essay • Submitted draft of essay • Class Notes • Reading Notes • Take our final class survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/H9RT8PK
