The 6bone started about 3 years ago as a world-wide testbed for IPv6 running tunneled through the existing IPv4 Internet. IPv4 Internet IPv4/IPv6 dual stack router IPv4/IPv6 dual stack router IPv6 host IPv6 host IPv6 tunneled through the IPv4 Internet End-to-end IPv6
ESnet established the 6REN is a follow-on to the 6bone, in that it is strictly native IPv6, production initiatve. Initial participants were R&E networks IPv6 router IPv6 router IPv6 host IPv6 host router-to-router PVCs ATM is a great multiplexer End-to-end IPv6
Current 6REN Participants • MCI/vBNS (US) • NTT (JP) • Renater/G6 (FR) • Sprint (US) • SURFnet (NL) • WIDE (JP) • MIRnet (RU) &AARNET (AU) soon • CAIRN US) • Canarie (CA) • CERNET (CN) • Chungwa (TW) • ESnet (US) • Internet2 (US) • IPFnet (DE)
Why a 6TAP • In the early days of IPv6 production service it will be difficult to find native IPv6 peering points • establishing, measuring and documenting good peering, registry and route serving procedures is best done from the start • the 6TAP will enable both the above as the STAR TAP is a very widely used common peering point for all RENs, and it will be easier to establish peerings
6TAP architecture Co-located at StarTAP StarTAP Project ATM switch & port 6TAP router Out of band access via ethernet and dialup STAR TAP ATM switch Wide area ATM links from StarTAP participants worldwide Local OC3 link Ports for other StarTAP Project use 6TAP registry & route server R&E network already using v4 over ATM to reach StarTAP simply sets up a v6 ATM PVC path to the 6TAP router
Equipment and operational support are being provided by: Router: ESnet Route Server: CANARIE in collaboration with MERIT MRT project w/equipment possibly by sun Registry: QWEST (continuation of work started at ISI) ATM switches/ports: NSF (ala Star TAP) StarTAP Project ATM switch & port 6TAP router STAR TAP ATM switch Wide area ATM links from StarTAP participants worldwide Local OC3 link Ports for other StarTAP Project use 6TAP registry & route server
IPv6 peers can immediately get access to other IPv6 peers by establishing only one direct peering with the 6TAP router. The 6TAP router will provide IPv6 routing information and transit traffic forwarding Native IPv6 peers 6TAP router ATM switch for IPv6 @star tap Wide area ATM links from StarTAP participants worldwide Native IPv6 peer
ESnet will provide IPv6 routing and transit between 6TAP peers and non 6TAP 6bone/6ren peers (as well as to ESnet sites). ESnet IPv6 sites 6TAP peers (native IPv6 [6ren]) 6TAP IPv6 router ... ESnet IPv6 backbone IPv6 router ... 6bone/6ren IPv6 peers (6bone is tunneled/6ren is native IPv6)
ESnet will provide limited access to the 6TAP router. Native IPv6 peers 6TAP router ATM switch for IPv6 @star tap Wide area ATM links from StarTAP participants worldwide Native IPv6 peer WEB access: -Looking glass for routing info -BGP peering status (up/down) - MRTG Stats additional polling variable requests will be considered
We’ve decided to deploy 12.0 IPv6 cisco code, which is more interesting than staying with the limited 11.3 based code. The 12.0 release supports the enhanced ATM PA-A3 interface; the rev 11.3 does not. Native IPv6 peers dialup 6TAP router Cisco 7206 12.0 based code rev ATM switch for IPv6 @star tap Wide area ATM links from StarTAP participants worldwide backup ethernet access Native IPv6 peer Has both ATM enhanced PA-A3, and ATM PA-A1 interfaces
The 6TAP router will support native IPv6 peerings only, and no tunneled IPv6 (6bone) connections. native IPv6 BGP peering sessions Native IPv6 peers 6TAP router Cisco 7206 12.0 based code rev ATM switch for IPv6 @star tap Wide area ATM links from StarTAP participants worldwide Native IPv6 peer

We’ll provide a web page for establishing BGP peering sessions.
