Narrative Essay What is a narrative essay, anyway?
Definition: • A narrative essay is simply an essay in which you tell a story. It can recount an event/experience or tell a story. It is a narration. • Remember, when writing one it should be done in first (using “I”) or third (using “he,” “she,” “it”) person point of view.
Purpose and Context • Keep in mind why you are writing the narrative. This stems from the question you are given. • Early in your essay you need to establish the context – answer: • Who • What • When • Where
Organization • One of the traits of good writing, remember? • Narratives typically happen in chronological order, so keep that in mind when you begin writing. • Flashbacks are useful tools and can be a creative touch. Use them effectively if you wish.
Details! • You should include details (think imagery) that make your paper come alive. • Include enough details to add depth and richness but not so many that it makes your essay hard to read or understand.
