Cluster of Excellence - “From Regenerative Biology to Reconstructive Therapy” Special Lecture: Noriyuki Kasahara, MD PhDAbstract:The use of tumor-selectively replicating viruses for tumor mass reduction and destruction of its immunosuppressive milieu, combined with the use of more potent genetically-engineered cancer vaccines and immune effector cells, may provide a new generation of biological therapies, which are now being tested in clinical trials. Conversely, immunosuppressive mechanisms evolved by tumors may provide useful clues for genetic engineering of allograft cells to avoid immune rejection. Furthermore, the ability to genetically engineer stem cells has opened new possibilities for the development of novel therapies for cancer, transplantation, and regenerative medicine. This lecture will focus on the interface between these areas of research, and current strategies that are reaching the stage of clinical translation.
