Illinois Section …timeline for success (2008) Committee established & exploration of options • Added some small activities to already established interests • Started planning for participation in larger activities (2009-2010) Member engagement to grow volunteer manpower • Added manpower as participation and # of events grew • Some of these became larger annual activities that we continued year–to-year (2011- 2012) Assessment and evaluation of where we are • 5 – 10 events per year • 2 – 20 volunteers depending on the need • Establishing second committee
Illinois Section …lessons learned • Use shotgun/dartboard approach to get started • Member ‘Champions’ • Section Board, Committees and Technical Groups • STEM related groups /organizations in your area • Student chapters at local colleges • Active individuals with kids in school • Other engineering organizations (SWE, ACEC, SAME, etc.) • A two-pronged outreach approach is indicated • Schools and school districts • Extra curricular opportunities (Scouts, museums, libraries, Future Cities, etc.)
