Beginning With Boston • Laws have angered most Bostonians, the armies made it worse • Boston Massacre – March 5, 1770 • Angry mob threw stones and taunted the “redcoats” • “Redcoats” fire on unarmed mob and kill 5 • Crispus Attucks – part African, part Native American dies • Propaganda – information designed to influence opinion • Samuel Adams put up posters • Paul Revere creates an engraving • Parliament repeals the Townshend Acts (except on tea) • Committee of Correspondence – an organization used in earlier protests • Samuel Adams revived this group; others revived as well

Really? • The Tea Act – 1773 • British East India Company was on the brink of bankruptcy • The Act gave them the right to ship without paying most taxes • And, they also could sell straight to the shopkeepers • Shipped to Boston, Philadelphia, New York, and Charles Town • NYC and Philly forced the ships back; Charles Town seized tea • The Ship arrived in Boston… • The Boston Tea Party – Dec 16, 1773 • Samuel Adams and the Boston Sons of Liberty dress up like Mohawks • Throw 342 chests of tea overboard

I Can’t Tolerate This… • The Intolerable Acts – or the (Coercive Acts) • George III – along with Lord North (prime minister) take action against the traitorous colonies • They enact the Coercive Acts to punish Massachusetts • Close Boston Harbor • Banned Town Meetings • Royal Officers tried in Britain (not in the colonies) • Shelter Soldiers in Bostonian homes • The other colonies respond by taking care of Boston’s needs • The Quebec Act – passed after the Coercive Acts • Set up permanent government for Quebec • Granted religious freedom for French Catholics • This is land west of the Appalachians • Colonists believed they had claim to that territory
