  2. Exam 2 Wednesday in class • Covers R and K Chapter 8, 9, 10 • And ‘not in the text’ • And IPCC Summary for Policy Makers • And carbon wedges • Material mostly since Exam 1, but the skills with units and balancing very simple reactions will be assumed.

  3. Final course grade • Midterm 1=100 • Midterm 2 = 100 • Sum of HW=150 (including CAPA) • Final = 200. • Total = 550

  4. TodayCarbon overview How much CO2 is being spewed? Changes? Atmospheric CO2 Where is the rest? Does carbon determine our destiny?

  5. The logic • Burning fossil fuels, the accumulation of millions of years of solar energy, emits CO2, in large and increasing amounts. • This CO2 (with other modern gases) will change the heat balance of the planet. • The effects of this heat balance will be climate change, only partially predicable. • There may be feedback mechanisms that may accelerate and amplify these changes, leading to large uncertainties.

  9. Reminder- Emitting 9 billion tons of carbon per year is the equivalent of 9 *44/12 =33 billion tons of CO2!!!!!
