Higher Education at a Glance Colorado has over 470 institutions educating approximately 375,000 students: -28 public institutions -3 area technical schools -over 100 private institutions -over 330 private occupational schools
H.E, at a Glance, (cont) Colorado’s Public institutions • Include 14 four-year institutions • 13 community colleges • 2 local district colleges • 3 area technical colleges Which combined • Support over 97,500 jobs in the State • Contribute $4.25 billion in wages and salaries and almost $387 million in state and local taxes to the Colorado economy annually
We live in a state that is changing… rapidly • Our population is growing, aging and becoming more diverse • The jobs available, and skills needed to fill them are shifting • We are a state that has depended on in-migration to meet occupational demands • By 2035, 45% of Colorado’s labor force will shift due to a combination of retirements and new demands. • By 2018, it is projected that nearly 70% of jobs will require some form of postsecondary education- Colorado will be 5th in the nation in postsecondary need intensity
Higher education has key economic & social benefits… • Increases personal income and economic strength • Increases workforce participation, health, productivity and dollars to the state • Increases volunteerism, civic and artistic involvement • Decreases rates of incarceration, unemployment, participation in Medicaid and other social service programs • Improves job security and increased earning potential
