Positive Youth Development "The field of positive youth development focuses on each and every child's unique talents, strengths, interests, and future potential." -William Damon-professor of education and director of the Center of Adolescence at Stanford University. -Young people as resources rather than as problems for society. -Holistic:Considers whole community in relation to whole child.

"Art is the most complex expression of longing and aspirations of a society." -John Dewey (1934) -to critque art is to participate in democratic practice. - examination of diverse art prompts individuals to discover "the meaning and value of what they do." -Art education nurtures thoughtful reflection. Both individual and societal reflection. -Viewing art and reasoning theoretically invite responsible dialogues. Responsible dialogues promote democracy.
Community Youth Development in Action The Intonation Music Workshop y Provides under served youth in Chicago withacces with access to musical instruments, hands on on instruction, and performance opportunities in in neighborhoods where it is needed most. Allows students to work together to solve problems and create music. Promotes Dewey's idea of learning through doing.

Final thoughts/questions/imagined scenario Your library/information center/community resource center recently received a $15,000 grant to partner with a community youth development organization that focuses on art education(music, painting, photography, ceramics, etc). The aim of the grant is to promote information literacy and community engagement amongst the youth through art education. What kinds of programs/services would your organization create? Do your ideas address the positive youth development constructs addressed earlier? If so, how? If not, why?
