Are we getting the food we paid for? Kannov Kapoor, Visual Argument Food Within Rowan University
The Problem • Rowan University must provide their students with more places to eat ranging in a wider variety of healthier foods with good service provided by the school at all times of the day • Rowan provides students with a small selection of places to eat (7 options) Including a cafeteria open everyday but only till 7PM • The 4 places downstairs are only open till 9PM on weekdays and “Profs Place” is open everyday till 1AM serving as the only place open after midnight • Rowan holds only one dining hall throughout its whole campus in spite of them attending to all 10,000 students who go to the school • Service by Sodexo is poor quality as well as the food they offer • Employees often take breaks and are not working during their shifts, causing slow service • The school should provide students with healthier options to eat from downstairs
Meal plan • According to the Rowan University Meal Plan Contract & Rowan Card Account Form: • Unlimited Meal Plan (All-Access Meal Plan): “This plan is designed for full-time resident students, who have a hearty appetite. It allows student's unlimited entry and unlimited meals in the Marketplace each week, as well as one meal per period in the Food Court locations” • Although the plan says unlimited in it, students are held to only one swipe per food period on weekdays, making the plan not serve on an unlimited basis but rather only on weekends
Meal plan Description of Plan Cost per Semester: All-Access plan w/ $75 Dining Dollars & $100 'Boro Bucks $1,980.00 Any 14 Meal Plan w/ $100 Dining Dollars & $200 'Boro Bucks $1,880.00 Any 10 Meal Plan w/ $100 Dining Dollars & $200 'Boro Bucks $1,690.00 Any 7 Meal Plan w/ $100 Dining Dollars & $200 'Boro Bucks $1,380.00 Any 50 Block plan w/ $75 Dining Dollars & $100 'Boro Bucks $535.00 Any 25 Block plan w/ $75 Dining Dollars & $100 'Boro Bucks $360.00
What’s missing • Picture on Rowan.edu for Prof’s Place • Not in the picture: • The fact that only one of the Kiosk’s are working causing long lines out the door • The long lines. Not only does this picture not include the large mass of people that surround the place since it is one of the few places to eat on campus, but it doesn’t focus on the worker’s who are there • Sedexo, Rowans dining service only requires two employees to be working at a station at a time • Results in slow production of food and long waits for students • The greasy and fattening food is not pictured in this photo and doesn’t capture the amount of employees working at one time
Comparison to another state school: Rutgers University – New Brunswick • Although Rowan University is a public state school, it still doesn’t provide enough dining services around campus to their students • Rutgers is made up of 4 separate dining halls located on each campus • Besides for the large amount of options of food to choose from in the dining halls, many other dining services not owned by Rutgers surrounds the area • This spreads out distribution of kids so that dining halls don’t become over packed and production of food becomes slow • “More than 100 on campus and off campus locations are accessible through the swipe of your University ID Card.” –www.Food.rutgers.edu
Nutrition • According to Rowans Website, Labels must all be included at all dining locations • on campus Sodexo's nutrition icons make it easy to identify healthy choice: “Look for these nutrition icons on the foods being served on your campus to help you meet your dietary needs or desires. If you need assistance finding the right types of foods for you, please reach out to your on-campus Sodexo manager or chef. If you have additional dietary questions, please contact us so we can help! Sodexo has registered dieticians ready to answer your questions and help you make healthy choices.” – www.Rowandining.com • In actuality, None of these labels exist in the cafeteria or dining places downstairs
Out with old, in with the new • Besides from Rowan missing a large amount of food eateries on campus, the school should work on improving the quality of food so that students can make healthier choices • With healthier food options offered downstairs at all times of the day, students can improve the quality of their health based on what they eat throughout the day • World of Wings, Smokehouse Barbecue, and Yella’s Grill are not the solutions in order to make student’s diets healthier
The Solution • Since Rowan University students are paying relatively a large amount for their meal plan, they should be offered with more places to eat • Example: Students paying $1,980.00 for the unlimited meal plan • The Solution: Constructing a new building for students to eat • Instead of spending money on signs around campus, and merging with other schools, Rowan should focus on spending the money on useful things such as building a new dining hall
The solution • Rowan Should improve on: • Proving students with another student center with more dining options to eat • This will help: Student life to become more spread out resulting in shorter waits for food, better service due to less students in one place, and will help Rowan offer diverse meal options to choose from • With more options to eat offered to student’s, overall health can increase because students will have broader range of places to eat and choose from
Conclusion • With Rowan’s diverse student body, it should become a PRIORITY to improve the overall quality of their dining • Adding another dining hall, with better: • Quality of food • Quality of service • Healthier options to choose from • More dining places for students to eat offered by Rowan University • Dining hall open at all times of the day
