The Root • Tension between Hutu (85% of population) and Tutsi(15%of population) began with German colonization in 1894 • Belgium took control in 1933, after WWI; discrimination favored Tutsi • Hutu political movement 1950s-60s; excluded Tutsi • 1962 Rwanda gains independence • This year marks the 20th anniversary of the genocide. The Rwandan government is holding ceremonies this week- April 7th

  3. The root • 1960s-80s attacks cause many Tutsi to seek refugee in Uganda • 1988 Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) founded in Uganda • April 6, 1994Rwandan President JuvénalHabyarimana was killed • Genocide began on April 7, 1994 and lasted until July 1994
