  1. In The Footsteps Of The Master:The Life and Times of Jesus Christ The Sermon on the Mount (Conclusion) June 28, 2009 www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  2. Not Everyone ... • Matthew 7:21-23 • 21“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.22Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ 23And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  3. Lord, Lord • This is the first time in Matthew that Jesus is referred to as “Lord” • Greek “kyrie” is a term of social superiority (employer, slave master, father), not necessarily Lordship • “ho Kyrios” is used to refer to God, but is not used here • Used here as “kyrie, kyrie”, probably implying a recognition of Jesus’ true Lordship, rather than simple social status www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  4. Jesus’ Deity • Jesus places Himself in the position of being the One to whom followers must give an account • “Many will say to Me ...” • “I will declare to them ...” • He again asserts His Deity • He holds the keys to the Kingdom www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  5. “Did We Not ...?” • These were people who were, indeed, performing “good deeds” • Prophesying • Exorcism • Miraculous deeds • What, then, was their failure? • Jesus did not “know” them • He refers to them as “evildoers” or “lawless” • How could they perform miraculous works without being empowered by God? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  6. Compare With ... • Mark 9:38-41 • 38John said to Him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us.” 39But Jesus said, “Do not hinder him, for there is no one who will perform a miracle in My name, and be able soon afterward to speak evil of Me. 40For he who is not against us is for us. 41For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because of your name as followers of Christ, truly I say to you, he will not lose his reward.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  7. For Discussion • So, again, what was the failure of these disciples in Matthew 7? • Why were they “evildoers” or “lawless”? • Discipleship is apparently about far more than what we do • It is about our relationship with Jesus • And His with us ... • Their punishment? • “Depart from Me ...” • What does separation from Jesus mean? • What is the message in this for us? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  8. The Wise Man • Matthew 7:24-27 • 24“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.” • Let’s all sing ... www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  9. The Foolish Man • Matthew 7:26-27 • 26“Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  10. Observations • Note that He again stresses His role • “These words of Mine ...” • Note that both groups heard the words that Jesus said • Both groups were engaged with Jesus • One group acted on those words • The other didn’t • Which words is Jesus speaking of? • How does such listening and doing prepare us for the “flood”? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  11. The Crowds are Amazed • Matthew 7:28-29 • 28When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; 29for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes. • Matthew 5:1 • 1When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. • It would seem that Matthew’s intent is to shed light on how those on the fringe responded to Jesus’ words www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info

  12. As One Having Authority • The people were used to the well-educated scribes interpreting the OT Scriptures and making rulings from them • Much as attorneys and judges interpret laws today • However, Jesus didn’t seem to be interpreting • He was declaring the Truth • He was teaching the will of God directly www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
