The Birth of the Empire • Songhai freed themselves from the great Mali Empire. • Because they were Muslim, the Songhai’s traded with the Berbers who were Muslim as well. • Shared religion = more trading w/ the Songhai empire
Growth and Conquest • Songhai grew richer from trans-Saharan trade. • With the profits they made from trade, the Songhai’s expanded their empire. • Timbuktu and Djenne became part of the Songhai empire.
Sunni Ali • Sunni Ali: Songhai’s first leader • During 1468 Mali asked Sunni Ali to help fight off the Tuareg invaders,Ali agreed but kept the land • 5 years later he was able to capture the wealthy trade city, Djenne.
During Ali’s Reign • Organize and helped to unify the Songhai Empire • Encouraged people to live in harmanony and taught people to work together • With the profits he helped for the Songhai’s to earn he was able to create places for education and other cultural achievements.
