Life Became Hard • Indians suffered in New Spain • Encomiendas: large area of land that included Indian villages • Native Americans had to work for new owner • Colonist agreed to house and feed them • What is this similar to? • Colonists promised to teach Native Americans new skills and Christianity

  4. Bartolome de las Casas • Catholic priest • Defended Indian rights • Came to Hispaniola to be a missionary • Indians dying of disease and overwork
