    1. Egan Stage 2 (Step A) “the preferred scenario” Help facilitate the use of the client’s imagination Help explore possibilities for a better future Help make that first step from the problem state of mind and feelings of misery To help develop a sense of hope and possibilities

    2. Egan Stage 2 (Step A) Help client see and understand their problems and opportunities more clearly Help determine what they actually want Help move beyond the present unacceptable state Help explore a more acceptable and realistic state of affairs

    3. Egan Stage 2 (Step B) Help clients move from preferred scenario possibilities into goals Expand or help translate a range of possibilites into a better future The client will select a specific goal The client will commit to a programme of change

    4. Egan Stage 2 (Step B) What the client really wants? A variety of preferred scenarios have been generated Including goals and desired outcome Help the client choose that make most sense to them That will help create the client’s agenda

    5. Egan Stage 2 (Step B) The client’s agenda is the first step in a constructive change programme for them Not unrealistic but a goal driven agenda Not idealistic or fancyful But rather, a picture of what life would be like if improvement were achieved

    6. Egan Stage 2 (Step B) Needs to be viable Capable of being turned into action Clear and substantive Specific outcomes In keeping with the client’s values Capable of being accomplished

    7. Egan Stage 2 (Step B) Realistic time frame What is the client willing to do to achieve what they want? What is the “cost”? This is a problem focused and problem management response

    8. Egan Stage 2 (Step C) Problem management goals need the active participation of the client If commitment and passion are not there it will not succeed There will be a need to search and identify incentives

    9. Egan Stage 2 (Step C) Incentives serve to move the process forward Hard choices may need to be considered Life may get in the way of good intentions Unpicking bad habits Comfort zone shift

    10. Stage 2 (Step C) Bad life habits are not easy to change We all struggle with commitment to change Just a set of great ideas or a realistic goal to be worked on? Remember, frustration with the process is inevitable if the client is not fully committed or engaged
