  4. Special Education • Modified Diploma • Phased out for incoming 9th Graders (2013-14) • Current grades 9-12 are still eligible • Requirements roll up to Standard • Modified required 20 Standard Credits, 0 verified • Standard requires 22 Standard Credits, 6 verified

Special Education • Credit Accommodations- • Approved by DOE to provide alternatives for students with disabilities to meet verified credit requirements • Credit Accommodations for students with disabilities may include: • Alternative courses to meet the standard credit requirements • Modifications to the requirements for locally awarded verified credits

  6. Special EducationCredit Accommodations • Additional tests approved by the Board of Education for earning verified credits • Adjusted cut scores on tests for earning verified credits • Allowance of work-based learning experiences through career and technical education (CTE) courses

  7. Career & Technical EducationVirginia’s Credentialing Initiative Must earn a VDOE approved CTE Credential to Graduate with a Standard Diploma

Career & Technical Education Virginia’s Credentialing Initiative Students can earn industry credentials in: • Adobe Photoshop • Agribusiness • AutoCAD • Family and Consumer Sciences • Financial Literacy • Hospitality Management Food and Beverage • Microsoft Office Specialist—PowerPoint • Microsoft Office Specialist—Word • National Professional Customer Service • Workplace Readiness Skills for the Commonwealth of VA

Career & Technical Education Virginia’s Credentialing Initiative (The Pruden Center) Students can earn industry credentials in: • Automotive Collision Repair and Finishing • Automotive Electrical/Electronic Systems • Automotive Engine Performance • Automotive Engine Repair • Certified Internet Webmaster--Internet Business • Certified Internet Webmaster—Network Technology • Certified Internet Webmaster—Site Development • ComTIA A+ Practical • ComTIA A+ Essential

Career & Technical Education Virginia’s Credentialing Initiative (The Pruden Center) Students can earn industry credentials in: • Early Childhood Education • Emergency Medical Technician • Introductory Craft Skills • Oracle • ProStart (National Restaurant) • ServSafe (National Restaurant) • Small Animal Science and Technology • Virginia Board of Barbering and Cosmetology • Virginia Board of Nursing Nurse Aide • Welding

Virtual Course • Compass Learning’s Odyssey Health Course may serve as the virtual course. • Selected modules will be assigned in the blended HPE9 course and the remaining modules will be assigned to HPE10. • This requirement will be met over a two year period. http://www.spsk12.net/virtual-programs-available

Community Service Requirement • Required to complete 50 hours of community service, which may include: • volunteering for a charitable or religious organization that provides services to the poor, sick or less fortunate; • participating in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts or similar youth organizations; • participating in political campaigns or government internships; • and participating in school-sponsored extracurricular activities that have a civics focus.

  15. Excellence in Civics Education Seal • A grade of B or better average in Virginia & United States History and Virginia & United States Government with good attendance and no disciplinary referrals will be eligible for the State Board of Education’s Excellence in Civics Education Seal.

  16. Community Service Requirement Recommended Number of Community Service Hours per Year Grade 9 at least 16 hours Grade 10 at least 17 hours Grade 11 at least 17 hours

  17. Community Service Requirement Students transferring into Suffolk Public Schools will be required to complete the following hours of community service: • Entering in grade 10 at least 35 hours (recommend at least 18 hours per year) • Entering in grade 11 at least 20 hours (recommend at least 18 hours per year) • Entering in grade 12 at least 10 hours

  18. Academic and Career Plan • The Academic and Career Plan is a framework/projection of a student’s plan of studies. • All schools shall begin development of a personal Academic and Career Plan for each seventh-grade student with completion by the fall of the student’s eighth-grade year. • Suffolk Public Schools began developing plans for students in grade 4.
