The Battle of Fredericksburg: December 11-15, 1862 The American Civil War Mr. Contipodero
The Basics • Fredericksburg, VA • One of the largest/deadliest battles of ACW • Approx 200,000 combatants (Union & Confederate)
Union • Ambrose E. Burnside • Army of the Potomac • 114,000 engaged • 12,653 casualties • 1,300 killed • 9,600 wounded • 1,760 captured/missing
Confederacy • Robert E. Lee • Army of Northern Virginia • 72,500 engaged • 5,377 casualties • 608 killed • 4,200 wounded • 653 captured/missing
The Union Plan • Burnside wanted to cross the Rappahannock River • Get to Richmond • Delay in getting pontoon bridges to cross river
The Counter • With the delay of pontoon bridges • Lee moved his army to block the crossings • Union Army was met with fire when attempting to cross
Marye’s Heights: December 13th • Hilly, open fields, scattered houses made for tough assault • Canal (west) crossed by 3 narrow bridges • Fog lifted around 10 am • Sumner gave order to attack
Marye’s Heights: December 13th • Burnside failed to make progress against Confederates • Stubbornly, Burnside kept giving the order to attack • At nightfall, Burnside tried to blame his commanding officers
Aftermath • Burnside asked Lee for a truce to tend to the wounded • Lee granted this • Richmond Examiner, “stunning defeat to the invader, a splendid victory to the defender of sacred soil.”
Reactions • PA Governor Andrew Curtin, “It was not a battle, it was a butchery!” • President Lincoln stated, “If there is a worse place than hell, I am in it.” • Burnside was relieved of command
Discussion Questions • After analyzing the Union progress that includes the Fredericksburg campaign, how would you assess the leadership qualities of Union generals, commanding officers, and President Lincoln? • From a geographical perspective, why did the Army of the Potomac desperately want to attack Fredericksburg?
