Programme Nuclear Safety Research (NUKLEAR) • Safety of Nuclear Reactors: • Study and evaluation of existing nuclear reactors with respect to • Design basis accidents and severe accident phenomena • Analysis of accident sequences • Radiological consequences on the basis of advanced R&D work • Safety of Nuclear Waste Disposal: • Study and examination of concepts of • Characterization and immobilization of nuclear waste • Reduction of radiotoxicity (including P&T) • Safety barriers for repositories • Radiation research to guarantee the long-term safety of nuclear waste disposal • Maintenance of Competence and Education 11th QUENCH Workshop, Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, 25-27. 10. 2005
Safety Research for Nuclear Reactors Investigations on severe accident phenomena Objectives: • Evaluation of safety margins • Reevaluation of SAM measures • Contribution to a common knowledge base (ASTEC) • QUENCH: Investigations on fuel rods during reflood • LIVE: Phenomena of core melting and in-vessel corium relocation • DISCO: Molten corium dispersion • COMET: Molten corium concrete interaction and coolability • Hydrogen: Behaviour of hydrogen in the reactor system 11th QUENCH Workshop, Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, 25-27. 10. 2005
Alliance for Competence in Nuclear Technology • Foundation due to initiative of BMWA Evaluation Commission (2000) • Objectives: Coordination of Nuclear Safety Research in Germany • Definition of research topics • Quantification of staff required Additional Members: • Federal Ministries BMBF, BMU, BMWA • Project Agencies PT-R, PTWt+E • BGR, ITU, MPA • German utilities 11th QUENCH Workshop, Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, 25-27. 10. 2005
Nuclear Power in Germany • Decision for phase out of nuclear use for commercial electricity production • but • nuclear electricity is 30 % of total • economical and environmental aspects • new government • and, in any case • safety of existing plants must be • guaranteed during next two decades 11th QUENCH Workshop, Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, 25-27. 10. 2005
Nuclear Power worldwide • Growing energy demand while • fossil resources become expensive • potentials of renewables are limited • fusion is far away • therefore • bright future for nuclear as a quasi • sustainable energy source • for electricty, heat, desalination, • hydrogen Gen 3+, Gen IV 11th QUENCH Workshop, Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, 25-27. 10. 2005
Energy demand worldwide 11th QUENCH Workshop, Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, 25-27. 10. 2005
Next generation nuclear reactors • Increased safety requests for future nuclear technology, e.g. • Generation IV nuclear energy systems • operations will excel in safety and reliability. • will have very low likelihood and degree of • reactor core damage. • will eliminate the need for offsite emergency • response. 11th QUENCH Workshop, Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, 25-27. 10. 2005
„The case of basemat penetration“ National and international projects – e.g. OECD-MCCI - could not demonstrate melt coolability outside the RPV. Therefore, in future reactors core catcher would be needed, e.g. COMET or melt retention, cooling, stabilisation is to be demonstrated within RPV Second option needs • better understanding of late core degradation phenomena, • evaluation of coolability of partly degraded cores • modeling of related phenomena for PSA Experimental basis projects like QUENCH, LIVE 11th QUENCH Workshop, Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, 25-27. 10. 2005
