  2. What is theGREEN SCHOOLS CHALLENGE? The U.S. Green Building Council – Arkansas Chapter is challenging public and private schools in Arkansas to devise and implement, with the help of professional green mentors, the most creative, effective and no or low cost sustainable practices for their schools & communities.

AR GREEN SCHOOLS CHALLENGE WINNERS 2011-12 • Platinum Award Best Overall Elementary Division: • Wooster Elementary, Greenbriar $750 • Gold Award Honor Elementary Division : • B Young Elementary, Springdale $500 • Silver Award Merit Elementary Division: • Northside Elementary, Rogers $250 • Platinum Award Best Overall  Secondary Division: • Cabot High School, Cabot $750 • Gold Award Honor Middle School Division: • Acorn Middle School Grades, Mena $500 • Gold Award Tied for Honor High Schools : • Weiner High School, Weiner $500 • Gold Award Tied for Honor High Schools: • Harrisburg High School, Harrisburg $500

Green Schools Challenge Goals • Energize sustainable curriculum in the school systems • Lower school operating and maintenance costs • Reduce Carbon Footprint • Increase facilities indoor air quality • Improve the learning & teaching environment • Conserve our natural resources • Encourage students to think creatively about sustainability • Promote environmental stewardship in our communities • Create a generation of environmentally conscious adults • Engage the business community and building industry to help students green their schools

Recognition for Outstanding Achievement by Age Group • Platinum Award for Overall Winning Teams at Elementary and Secondary Level • Gold Award for Winners at Elementary, Middle and High Schools • Silver Award for Achievement at Elementary, Middle and High Schools • Cash Awards at each winning level • Trophy for each winning team • Presentation of checks and trophies at local school board meetings or assemblies

  8. Challenge Timeline • May 7, 2012 Official launch • August 15, 2012 Mentor applications due • September 1, 2012 Deadline for teams to register • March 15, 2013 Conclude the Challenge • April 5, 2013 Winners Announced

  9. Schools Register by September 1 You may register as an individual classroom, (6th grade science) or a grade level (all 8th grade) or student club (Environmental Club) an entire school (elementary, middle or junior high, or high school).

  10. Mentors for Each School USGBC- Arkansas will assign mentors for each school (architects, engineers, builders, developers, college students, etc) to each school to compliment the teachers’ efforts and to provide guidance in sustainable practices. Mentors will work along side the teachers and students for an average of 4 hours per month.

  11. Call for Mentors USGBC Arkansas is challenging its members and other qualified businesses and individuals to mentor local schools and implement the most creative, effective, and no/low cost sustainable practices for their schools. Mentors will work along side the teachers and students for an average of 4 hours/month from September 1-March 15.

  12. Who are Mentors Mentors will be USGBC-AR members or businesses and persons associated with the building industry and may include: • Architects • Engineers • Contractors • Facilities Managers • Green Product Suppliers • College Students help as Green Shadows

  13. Mentor Responsibilities • Provide sustainability expertise and guidance at your assigned school • Compliment teachers’ efforts to provide a sustainable curriculum • Commit to a minimum of 4 hours/month of personal time mentoring in assigned school • Help students and teachers green their schools for little or no cost • Help assigned school complete the submission by March 15 • Get photo releases signed • Attend a 2 hour mentor training workshop

Project Submissions • Encourage schools to take pictures and video throughout the project • Document savings in both $ and units • (pounds recycled, kW saved, gallons saved) • Submission Due by 5 pm, March 15, 2013: • 1 page cover form • 1 page written report • Maximum 5 minute video or digital presentation • Photo Release forms

Project Tips • Make it an ongoing project throughout the year • Encourage the Green Team to share their efforts with the whole school • Must be a new project or major expansion of existing efforts • Think about the rubric as your prepare report • Documentation of dollar and resource savings are the key goal • Remember to consider how the project will continue
