Comparing Structures Fossils
On Moodle… • Find the Comparing Structures Wkst • Open it in Notability • Write your name at the top • Open a Trilobite Info reading at your level • Use the color given by your teacher • Red/orange/honors=3 • Yellow/green=2 • Blue/purple=1
Learning Target • I can use anatomical structure to compare and infer relationships between organisms. • Success criteria: I am successful when I can make a claim about age or relationships and support it with evidence.
Fossils • Scientists have recently uncovered some fossils buried deep under the ocean. • They are sending you samples for your “expert” opinion.
Group by Similarity • Please categorize or group your paper organisms by similarities you find.
Group by Similarity • Answer the following questions in your document 1. Which characteristics did you use to group these organisms? (Please be specific) 2. Which was the most difficult to group/categorize? Why? (EXPLAIN)
Regroup by Age • Further organize your organisms by putting them in a timeline order. • Oldest on the bottom!
Group by Similarity • Answer the following questions in your document 3. How did you decide where to place each organism on the timeline? 4. Which was the most difficult to group/categorize? Why? (EXPLAIN)
Take a photo of your timeline organization and insert it on your worksheet.
Now that you are an expert… We are going to look at some new organisms.
Trilobites An investigation into fossils
Find a partner within the same color as you. • Red/Orange • Find in front • Yellow/Green • Find in middle • Blue/Indigo • Find in back
Find a comfy spot in the room. Read with your partner. • Stop after each paragraph and write a one-sentence summary (in your Notability document) • Paragraph 1: • Paragraph 2: • Paragraph 3:
When you are done reading and writing, your teacher will place you with another group (total 4 people). Cut outyour trilobites.Keep the numbers!!! Get a trilobite worksheet from the back table.
Group by Similarity • Now that you know a little bit about trilobites, please categorize or group your paper trilobites by similarities you find. • Don’t forget the characteristics you used with the Nintendo “fossils.”
Group by Similarity • Answer the following questions in your document 1. Which numbers did you group together? 2. Which characteristics did you use to group these organisms? (Please be specific) 3. Which was the most difficult to group/categorize? Why? (EXPLAIN)
Regroup by Age • Reorganize your trilobites and put them in a timeline order. • Oldest on bottom • *Hint*- think about your similarity groups-could they help you?
Regroup by Age • Consider this… If you have organized into one timeline, consider that more than one could have existed at the same time.
Take a photo of your timeline organization and insert it on your worksheet.
Regroup by Age • Answer the following questions in your document: 8. How did you decide where to place each organism? 9. What made you think an organism was older? Younger?(Please be specific) 10. Which was the most difficult to group/categorize? Why? (EXPLAIN)
Compare • Your teacher will pair you with another group. • Travel to their poster to observe their final trilobite organization. • Bring your iPad along to make notes. Take a picture and insert it with a heading “Partner group by Age.” • Answer the following question in your document: 11. Did this group organize the same as your group? If not, EXPLAIN. Note any specific differences.
Return to your seats. We will now look at the real organization of these trilobites.
2. 5. 6. 8. 7. 1. 3. 4. 9.
Answer Key Youngest Oldest
Reflection 12. Compared to the actual timeline, were you accurate? EXPLAIN 13. Why did we always put the oldest at the bottom? 14. What was frustrating about this activity? 15. What would have made it easier to complete accurately? 16. Think about actual scientists…do they ever get an actual answer? EXPLAIN 17. How can scientists use fossils to predict possible connections/relationships to other organisms? 18. Are there any organisms today that you think could be related to the trilobite? Why do you think this?
More present day “imposters” • Chiton • Tadpole shrimp
A new discovery! • Archaeologists have made a new trilobite discovery and shipped a diagram for your immediate action. • Where would you place this most recent finding in your timeline? • Does it make you rethink your organization? • Draw arrows, circles, etc. if you feel changes are necessary. • Take a picture and insert it with a heading, “Group by Age.”
SMM Fossils • Take a picture of each of your fossils and insert into your document. • Think about: Is there a way to show size? • Label them 1, 2, 3, etc. so you can write about them.
SMM Fossils • Look at your fossils: 14. Which do you think is older? Why? • Open the Trilobite Tree on Moodle 15. Which order (ex: Agnostida) do your trilobites fit into? 16. What period (ex: Cambrian) do they fit into?
