Unit 3 Lesson 4 - TEXTBOOK 5.2 DIRECT AND INVERSE VARIATION Variation relates to 2 variables: like x and y or age and height Direct Variation is when 2 variable change in the same sense. (one number gets bigger, so does the other) Inverse Variation is when 2 variables change in an inverse sense. (one number gets bigger, so the other gets smaller ... a fraction of the 1st) Example: the more people you invite to a party the higher the cost Example: the more people you invite to a party the lower the cost per person. The cost per person varies inversely to the number of people that attend.
Direct Variation - a relationship between 2 numbers when their ratio remains constant. The Direct Variation Equation is y = kx, where k is a constant not = 0 Characteristics - 1) Linear, increases or decreases at a constant rate 2) Graph goes through the origin
Examples: y = 3x They occur outside Algebra... Example: C = d
