Conclusions! Title: • Conclusion Notes Page Number: • Page 58 Date: • January 6, 2012
About: • Conclusions review everything you have just written in your essay. • Conclusions feel redundant
Transition (Sentence) • Transition • Start conclusions with a FINAL TRANSITION WORD OR PHRASE • Transition Sentence • Finally…, In conclusion…, In summary…, In the end … Leads into conclusion topic sentence which summarizes the essay.
Transtion (Sentence) Examples: • “In the end, Elie experiences a multitude of changes through his experiences in the Holocaust.” • “In conclusion, the weight of human impact on others has no limit in value and Elie is a prime example of this.” • “Finally, Elie’s story of survival and pain is one example among many reasons why no one should stay silent.”
Background • BACKGROUND IS VERY IMPORTANT! • Remind your reader of some of the general points you have brought up. • Background should be 3-4 sentences • You must remind your audience of your three main points • Be repetitive- just use different wording
Background • BACKGROUND EXAMPLES • “The Holocaust is a tragic event that spurs Elie to write about his experiences …” “Though Elie’s experience is not so different from millions of others, his story is poignant because …” • “It is human nature for people to be greatly effected by others, especially during the most difficult of times; Elie’s story is no exception…”
Restate Three Part Thesis • Repeat the message of the thesis statement in your introduction! • Paraphrase your own work • Do NOT copy and paste the thesis into your conclusion • Keep the same message but use a different angle or words
Concluding thought • Final sentence of your essay • This is the last impression your will make on your audience • Make your audience think about the bigger picture surrounding your topic • Do not summarize- MAKE A STATEMENT ABOUT SOMETHING!
