  2. Background • Where to begin? • List from Dr. King • Contacted Dr. Couch at Stallworth Rehab Center • Gave us a number of ideas including: • Standing Box • One-Handed Fishing Rod • Model of car to practice transferring a from a wheelchair • Voice activation devices

  3. Standing Box : 5 W’s • Who? • Paraplegics, Multiple Sclerosis(MS) and stroke patients. • What? • Device that assists the patient with standing on his/her own. • When? • Everyday, or as often as the Physician prescribes (Usually 30 min. per day).

  4. Standing Box:5 W’s (con’t) • Where? • In the convenience of their own home, in the hospital, or in rehabilitation center. • Why? • To prevent muscle atrophy and to rehabilitate the muscles to walking condition.

  5. One-Handed Fishing Rod: 5 W’s • Who? • Anyone suffering from loss of arm or mobility of limb (many Vets, older citizens, stroke patients). • What? • Fishing rod adapted to be worked with one arm and hand. • When? • To be used on any sunny afternoon at the sportsman’s desire.

  6. One-Handed Fishing Rod: 5 W’s (con’t) • Where? • This product will be used on lakes, oceans, anywhere man dares to fish. • Why? • For fun. For the pleasure of fishing!

  7. Standing Box • Problems with the Boxes • Requires two people to get in and out • Cannot use at home without someone there to help • Solution • Re-engineer a standing box so that a person can get into and out of the box by themselves

  9. Design • Goals • Take a wooden standing box and design it where one person can get into and out of alone • Steps • Add a sliding door • Add a lift mechanism • Provide handles for aid

  10. One-Handed Fishing Rod • Use for patients with an inability or limited ability of one arm. • Amputees • Stroke Patients • Broken bones • Other conditions that would only allow for use of one arm

  11. Design • What arm does the patient have limited use of? • Back support* for stability. • PVC piping that will attach to leg for rod to fit into. *Complements of Comprehensive Loss Management Inc.

  12. Additional Design Specifications • PVC pipe attachment to the leg and to the back support. • 45° angle fitting for the rod to be placed into.
